My dear Chris
Nurse Thomas has taken up her duties and she is so nice. She nurses everyone – Mabyn, Arthur, Dr Meek, – in fact everyone. I think baby is much better because he cries so for me today. Before he did not seem to mind much who he was with. He was very restless the first part of the night but his motions are hardly anything.
Nurse is giving him raw beef juice today and is going to start him on condensed milk tomorrow. She seems to thoroughly understand him. Baby has not taken to her yet, but I think he will. She thinks it would be good for baby to have Ken down to liven him up, as the woman Aunt Harriett has will only be able to do the washing until tomorrow. I suppose you had better bring them down tomorrow and perhaps it would be less expensive if I got some woman to do the washing every day. The woman here now could not do it, but I dare say I could get one. Do as you think best dear.
I had such bad pain last night and had to go to Mrs Jones in the middle of the night. I think it is from this water – so I am not going to drink any but boiled water. I wish you would get me one of those ‘Sparklets’. Mary says they are only 7/6d at B G Wilson’s. I could then make myself soda-water. You might also bring me those little varolettes on my wash stand.
This is a regular hospital. Mrs McConnel is very bad with diahorrea. They are thinking of telephoning to the nurse that left us to come down to her – and the lady who has just had the operation, Mrs Fraser is very low spirited today and her heart very weak – she looks so bad.
I don’t know if it is worth while bringing me any songs down, if you do bring ‘Holly and a coach’, ‘Slave Song’, ‘A May Morning’, ‘Idle Words’, ‘Husheen. I think that will do.
Bring me some of that note paper in the box in our room – I think it is on the mantelpiece. I have told Mother a few other things I want. I wish I had you down here dear all the time, you must come as often as you can.
With love and lots of kisses for you and Ken from your loving Katie.
