Explanatory Notes
James Aberdour Elmslie’s first wife, Mary Ann Tatham, died following the birth of her seventh child, Mary Elizabeth Elmslie in May 1873. James then married Cecilia Cheyne in February 1875 and she bore James four more children. When James died in 1908 Cecilia continued to preserve his records and artefacts.
Cecilia died in 1939 and, at the end of WWII, her surviving family decided that some items should be sent to family members by then living permanently in Australia. The balance of James’ records etc. remained in England and together with Cecilia’s own records finally passed to a grandson, James Reginald Carrington Elmslie who prepared the information relating to his grandmother and her family.
